Oil is spewing into the Gulf and no one has any idea as to how big or how bad this spill is actually getting. The leak in the bottom of the ocean is spilling at a rate of 12,000 to 19,000 gallons per day. Also as of May17 a possible 260,000 to 540,000 gallons of oil have spilled into the ocean. That is much oil, it could fill up 34 olympic sized swimming pools, but also the estimate could be way off some experts say. It is possible a few million gallons of oil have leaked. Also over 160 miles of fishing grounds in the ocean have now been coated with oil, and thousands of miles surrounding those oil saturated lands have been closed to fishing.
I personally think that all of this is a bit ridiculous. If BP would have followed the safety rules in place none of this would have happend. Who even allowed such a company, who has had multiple violations already on their oil rigs, build another one out in the middle of the ocean? That was the dumbest decision someone could have ever made. This is an environmental disaster that will be extremly hard to fix. All of the wildlife that is being threatend by this disasster is absolutaly horrifying, the efforts to help and save the animals is not enough, they are sill getting oil soaked and they are still dying. The BP oil company should both, be federally charged for their offenses as well as hurry up and stop the leaking oil.
